Hello all,

I am new member and happy owner (when I have no problems) of a Gal since a couple of years.

I hope someone can help me since my car has develop a habit of wearing its back tires uneavenly and this create vibrations when I travel faster than 120 Kpm. Ford told me to change the back shock absorbers and I just had them tested and there was nothing wrong with them. This is not due by the tires since it is the second set of back tires which is worn down badly.

Anybody can help me find out the root cause, the car is from 2001 has done 140 000Km and I think the SAs are the originals.

Thank you,

Change the back shock absorbers, this is what you get when they're f****d.... :)

How can you tell if the SA's are worn out, should SA's be changed regularly (every 50 000Km?) is it easy to do yourself or should I only trust ford to do it?

You can't really test SA's meaningfully in a static way, the bounce test is so crude as to be useless. The vibration and uneven tyre wear is classic, basically the tyres are bouncing about without damping. It's very dangerous to continue driving, as if you were to do any emergency manouvere (i.e. a swerve) or emergency braking, you will probably find the handling completely uncontrollable.

Fit new shockers, IIRC on a shalaxy the rears should be very easy as they are external to any springs etc. Fit good quality gas filled shockers. Once fitted you will be amazed at the difference.
